Eligibility for membership

Eligibility changes with different insurers please contact Hour Car and enquire.

Membership of Hour Car is available to local people who:

Are resident or work in Calderdale.

Are at least 21 years of age and no older than 75 years of age (with existing Hour Car members permitted to remain up to age 77).

Are full driving licence holders who have held their driving licence for a minimum of 12 months, or a minimum of 24 months for those aged 23 or 24, or a minimum of 36 months for those aged 21/22 or 76/77. Those using a Multi Purpose Vehicle must have held their licence for a minimum of 24 months and be aged between 23 and 75 years.

Have no endorsements on their licence for those aged 21 to 24, and no more than one minor offence (those starting CD, MS, MW, PC, SP or TS) for drivers aged 25 to 75 years.

Have had no accidents (or documentary proof of not more than one no-fault accident) in the last three years for drivers aged 23 or 24, and no more than one accident for those aged 25 and over. Those aged 21/22 or 76/77 must not have had an accident in the past 3 years.

Are not professional sports people or professional entertainers.

Are not in occupations connected to gambling or betting.

Are not foreign servicemen based in the UK.

If unemployed or self-employed must provide appropriate additional address and identity verification.

A special case may be made for some people who don't meet these criteria, but a higher membership fee and insurance excess may be charged.

Ages 21 and 22

Living or working within Calderdale.
Full UK licence minimum Three years.
No current endorsements.
No accidents in the last Three years.
If EU licence, must have been resident in UK at least Three years.
No MPVs or in future Transit size vans, unless hold valid HGV category licence.

Acceptance in writing of acceptance that they assume full responsibility for fees incurred and for any insurance excess incurred (£500) from damage claims.

Ages 23 and 24

Living or working within Calderdale.
Full UK licence minimum Two years.
No current endorsements.
Accident free or documentary proof of no more that one no-fault accident in last three years.

Acceptance in writing of acceptance that they assume full responsibility for fees incurred and for any insurance excess incurred (£450) from damage claims.

Ages 25 to 75

Living or working within Calderdale.
Full licence minimum 12 months for cars up to five seats and vans.
Full licence minimum 24 months for MPVs.
EU and Foreign licences are accepted, provided they are still valid and comply with UK law if the person is now resident in the UK.
One minor current endorsement allowed (codes CU, MS, MW, PC, SP, TS).
One accident in last three years allowed.

Ages 76 and 77

Living or working within Calderdale.
Previous authorised members only, who have been members for at least two years.
Full UK licence for a minimum of five years.
No current endorsements.
No accidents last three years.
No MPVs or Transit size vans.

Acceptance in writing of acceptance that they assume full responsibility for fees incurred and for any insurance excess incurred (£350) from damage claims.

Occupations (insurance requirements)

Users who are self-employed or unemployed will be required to submit three satisfactory documents proving address and one proving identity other than their licence.

The following occupations are unfortunately excluded:
Professional sportspersons / entertainers.
Occupations connected to gambling or betting.
Foreign servicemen based in the UK.

Medical conditions and disabilities

Any conditions disclosed by applicants should be clarified to ascertain whether the condition must be notified to DVLA and that proof of this is provided; whether any special vehicle controls must be supplied, such as automatic transmission or hand controls, or whether strong medication or restricted movement might present a high risk when driving.

Otherwise if the person holds a three-year licence without other restrictions, then the policy will cover them.

Address and identity checks

Driving licence, plus two official address documents, plus one identity check document.

Or driving licence, plus two official address documents, plus signed letter from existing club member (member for 1 year at least).

If self-employed or unemployed, the applicant is required to produce driving licence, plus three official address documents, plus one identity check document.

Official documents accepted to verify name and address must be dated within last six months and preferably consecutive recent documents if same type. These include originals of:

  • Bank or building society statements
  • Lease agreement documents from landlord
  • Rent books
  • Council tax invoices
  • Inland revenue correspondence
  • Loan agreement documents
  • Credit card statements
  • Pension or personal insurance policy documents
  • Utility bills (beware of original quality as forgeries not uncommon)
  • Passport
  • Credit and debit card invoices
  • Store charge card invoice
  • Bank cheque cards and chequebook
  • Employer's identity card - with photo and signature laminated type from major or well known local company, not name badge or paper type
  • Letter verified by Carplus and written by existing club user or club coordinator who has been a member for a least 1 year, vouching for person's identity and confirmation of address
